What to Expect on Your First Day at Aesthetic School

Your first day at aesthetic school marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in your professional life. Whether you are transitioning from another career or entering the workforce for the first time, it is natural to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. At BC Medical Clinic, home of the Canadian College of Aesthetic Dermatology, we have welcomed hundreds of students through our doors, and we want you to feel prepared and confident from the moment you arrive. Here is a detailed look at what your first day will be like.

Arriving at BC Medical Clinic

BC Medical Clinic is located at 2929 Barnet Highway, Suite 1214, in Coquitlam, BC. Plan to arrive fifteen to twenty minutes before your scheduled start time on your first day. This gives you time to find parking, locate the suite, and settle in without feeling rushed. The building has ample parking, and our suite is easy to find once you are inside.

When you walk in, you will be greeted by our front desk team, who will direct you to the training area. The clinic has a professional, welcoming atmosphere that reflects the standards we maintain in both our training programs and our client-facing aesthetic services.

Meeting Mano Okhovat

One of the highlights of your first day will be meeting Mano Okhovat, the founder and lead instructor at BC Medical Clinic. Mano brings years of hands-on clinical experience to the classroom and is deeply passionate about preparing students for successful careers in aesthetics. Her teaching philosophy centers on the belief that every student deserves personalized attention and that true skill development comes from guided hands-on practice, not just textbook learning.

During your first day orientation, Mano will introduce herself, share her background in the aesthetic industry, and explain the teaching approach you can expect throughout your program. She is known for creating a supportive, encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making the natural mistakes that are part of the learning process.

The Hands-On Approach

Unlike some programs that spend weeks on theory before allowing students to touch equipment, BC Medical Clinic takes a hands-on approach from the very beginning. While your first day will include important foundational theory covering topics like skin anatomy, safety protocols, and hygiene standards, you will also get your first exposure to the professional equipment and tools you will be working with throughout your training.

Depending on your specific program, this might mean observing a live demonstration of a treatment technique, familiarizing yourself with the laser or aesthetic devices you will be learning to operate, or practicing basic techniques on training materials under close supervision. This immediate integration of theory and practice is intentional. It helps you understand why the theoretical knowledge matters by showing you how it applies directly to real-world treatments.

What to Bring

To make your first day smooth and productive, here is what we recommend bringing with you. A notebook and pen for taking notes during orientation and theory sessions. Any enrollment paperwork or documents that were requested during your registration process. A valid photo ID for your student file. Comfortable, professional clothing that you do not mind getting slightly messy, as you may be near products or equipment. Closed-toe shoes are required for safety reasons in the training area.

You do not need to bring any professional tools or supplies on your first day. Your program kit, which includes the specific tools and products you will need, will be provided or can be purchased through the clinic. Your instructor will go over the kit contents and explain how each item will be used throughout your training.

Lunch and snacks are also a good idea, especially if your program runs a full day. There are dining options nearby, but having something on hand ensures you stay energized and focused throughout the day.

A Typical First-Day Schedule

While the exact schedule varies by program, a typical first day at BC Medical Clinic follows this general structure. The morning begins with a welcome and orientation session where you meet your instructor and fellow students, receive an overview of the program structure and schedule, and review important policies including attendance, safety protocols, and assessment criteria.

Following orientation, the mid-morning session typically covers foundational theory. This includes the science behind the treatments you will be learning, an introduction to skin types and assessment methods, and a thorough review of health and safety standards including sanitation, contraindications, and client screening protocols.

After a lunch break, the afternoon shifts to a more hands-on focus. You may tour the treatment rooms, observe a live demonstration, and begin familiarizing yourself with the equipment specific to your program. The day wraps up with a summary of what was covered, a preview of upcoming sessions, and time for questions and one-on-one check-ins with your instructor.

Connecting with Your Classmates

Your first day is also an opportunity to connect with your fellow students. Many of our students form lasting professional relationships and support networks that continue well beyond graduation. You will find that your classmates come from diverse backgrounds, some with previous experience in beauty or healthcare and others who are completely new to the field. This diversity enriches the learning experience and creates a collaborative environment where everyone contributes unique perspectives.

Setting Yourself Up for Success

The best thing you can do on your first day is arrive with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Do not worry about being perfect or knowing everything. Your instructors understand that you are here to learn, and the entire program is designed to take you from beginner to competent practitioner through a carefully structured progression of skills and knowledge.

Your first day at aesthetic school is just the beginning. By the time you complete your program at BC Medical Clinic, you will have the skills, confidence, and credentials to launch a successful career in the aesthetic industry.
